01Carry a business or personal card. Many the opportunity has 10 passed by when someone asks the question: “Do you have a card?” Even if you are not in business (for example, you are studying), have a card made up with personal details. But don’t force it on people. 02 It’s quality, not quantity. Find out who the decision makers are. NETWORKING KEYS And don’t make each event a personal challenge of meeting and handing your card to, for example, 10 people. 03Be realistic about people’s response. Decision makers are busy people. Be sure to show your grati- tude and, if there is no feedback from the first follow-up, be patient. 04 Use the phone, or even hand- write a note. In the days of email, a personal touch is always noticed. But please, don’t stalk. Multiple unanswered messages usually means you’re wasting your time. And don’t hide behind technology. If you’re ringing with the intention of leaving a message, don’t ring at all. 05Respect the environment of an event: there is nothing as crass as a blatant networker at a funeral wake, for instance. 06Call in favours only when you really need them. Constant hassling from someone seeking a third-party contact is a turn-off. 07Accept no for an answer. We all admire determination, but at some point, enough is enough – and developing the reputation of being a pest (or overtly ambitious) can be networking death. 08If in any doubt at all, don’t make the off-colour joke, and avoid profanity. Your taste, and that of your friends, might not be shared by your prospective employer. 09Fact: MySpace, or Facebook, is social networking, but will get you nowhere in the job hunt. It might even cost you a job – make sure nothing on your site compro- mises you, or contrasts with the professional impression you want to project. 10Finally, never gossip. You don’t always know who knows who, and where relationships cross paths. A sly comment about someone in the corner could be directed at – and passed on to – the best potential contact in the room. governance skills step by step.
