Real Business : Issue 1 2012
The Naked CEO launches in February www.thenakedceo.com Real Business ISSUE 1, 2012 12 will also be able to read Malley ’s insights for every episode, and also find out what Rosenberg learns from each of the businesses covered in the show. “I have such a belief that if you give young people an avenue, an opportunity and they engage with it, they will have an advantage. So they might pick up a really important issue in business from the show and mention it in their next job interview. It might be that one- line comment that gives them a comparative advantage for a job,” says Malley. ROSENBERG WAS STRUCK by how relatable and generous Malley has been in sharing what he knows with him and other students. “Alex has taught me the importance of communication. To be a good leader you have to be able to communicate with the people beneath you as well as the people around you. He also said something very interesting one day, he wants to see people who are better than him go past him. I think that’s a very unique trait in a leader, to have the understanding that there are people out there who will be better than you and instead of trying to crush them in order to stay in the position that you’re in, you allow them to flourish and to go past you, which is only going to be better for you and your company in the long run,” he says. Malley says effective communication is the key to strong leadership, but he worries that the “looseness” of social media is not teaching reasonable protocols of communication. “I’m doing The Naked CEO through social media primarily because I don’t like it. But I recognise that I have a responsibility to get involved with social media and explain to students that while it might give them access to some information, it’s not going to train them to communicate well,” he says. “Ultimately, the principles of communication don’t change, the processes do. There may be a set of different communication mediums but fundamentally if you can’t speak in a positive, constructive way, you’re not going to get by.” The key message that comes across in The Naked CEO is that success comes to those who are passionate about what they do. It’s a lesson that Malley has learned himself and one that he hopes viewers will take to heart. “Focus on what you love doing. If you do, the chances are that you will stick with it for a period of time, and from that great things will come,” he says. “Factor in what you love to do and then focus on gaining experience. It will put you on the path to success.” “FUNDAMENTALLY LEADERSHIP IS ABOUT VISION, COURAGE AND IT’S ABOUT TAKING PEOPLE WITH YOU”— Alex Malley COVER STORY 10-12_NakedCEO.indd 12 10-12_NakedCEO.indd 12 6/02/2012 6:05:26 PM 6/02/2012 6:05:26 PM
