Dashb ard. Jo Cusack CPA TELLS US ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE WORKING IN THE UK How long did you work in the UK? What area did you work in? I worked in the UK for just under three years at Kingfisher Plc, in Paddington. Kingfisher Plc is a do-it- yourself company similar to Bunnings in Australia. It has 12 operating companies scattered throughout Europe. During my employment I started off working as a group accountant in financial control for the parent company then moved my way across to the IT sector where I took up the role as a project manager within Kingfisher. Did the CPA designation help you with employment opportunities outside of Australia? OVERSEAS WORK OPPORTUNITIES I 4 F YOU have the travel bug, but you’re tired of dragging your backpack around the world then working overseas to further your career may be your next step. CPA Australia has arrangements with leading accounting bodies across the globe, allowing members professional mobility and access to international job markets. CPA Australia recently signed a mutual recognition agreement with one of the world’s leading accountancy bodies based in the UK, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). CIMA grants a professional designation in management accounting both in the UK and internationally, with 164,000 members and students working in 161 countries. CIMA members and students work in industry, commerce and non-profit organisations. The agreement with CIMA allows qualified members to gain reciprocal membership, increasing their employability and competitiveness around the world. CPA Australia members who qualify for membership of CIMA have rights to use the CIMA designation in the UK. Likewise, CIMA members who qualify for membership of CPA Australia have rights to use the CPA designation. NET GAINS For more information about mutual recognition agreements visit the CPA Australia website http://www.cpaaustraliacom.au/9718_31354 or visit the CPA Careers website http://www.cpacareers.com.au/93 to read about how the CPA designation can take you places. Having the CPA qualification allowed me to gain a job pretty quickly once arriving in London as it was recognised within the finance sector and by recruitment companies. Do you think working overseas expands your career opportunities? Working overseas is definitely a positive addition to your CV. It not only allows you to gain different business skills, but also gives you the experience of working in different cultures. During my project management experience I was able to work on a project that spanned both the UK and France offices. Working in the UK provides you with so many opportunities. For me in particular it provided the opportunity to work for a large corporation. Most of the parent companies are generally based in London or New York so there is no shortage of large corporations to work for. Do you think the agreement with CIMA will open up more opportunities for you if you return to the UK? When I switched from a working holiday visa to a highly skilled visa the agreement would have definitely helped with meeting the visa requirements. Would you consider working in the UK again? Yes, I have definitely been thinking about [working in the UK again] given the economy and the size of companies and jobs in Australia. ? IS YOUR DEGREE ACCREDITED?
